While many of us were tucked up indoors on snow day, one Oasis Academy Brightstowe student was outside braving the elements, clearing his local roads.
Reece Phillips, Year 9, spent an entire afternoon helping others in the treacherous snow by gritting and clearing the roads, including outside an elderly people's home.
We became aware of Reece’s selfless deed after one of his neighbours shared a Facebook post, praising the 14-year-old.
The neighbour, whose post had over 800 likes and was shared more than 260 times, wrote: “How amazing is this young man? He’s been out putting salt down and helping all the cars … so I went out and asked him if he would like a hot drink.
"I asked him how old he was as he looked young, he’s 14 years-old and wants to be in the army one day … well I hope his dreams come true.”
Reece was also recognised on ITV West Country when a road user sent in a video message thanking him for his help.
He decided to brave the chill after seeing lots of cars sliding around the roads when he returned from school on Thursday afternoon.
“I saw lots of cars sliding around, so I thought rather than being sat indoors doing nothing, I wanted to be outside helping others.
“I was out there for about three hours … I even had ice in my hair when I came back indoors.”
Reece, who helped out about 10 vehicles in total, is in the cadets and has ambitions of joining the army after completing sixth form.
We are incredibly proud of Reece for braving the snow to help out those in need. A truly selfless act ... you are an inspiration to us all!
