Year 7 Literacy & Numeracy Catch-Up Premium

We are passionate about supporting all learners achieve their full potential – whatever their starting point.  Given this fact we invest in: the training and development of our staff; English and maths Mastery programmes for all students in Year 7;  accelerated reading programmes and bespoke intervention support.  Catch Up funding is used to support Year 7 students’ reading skills. We employ a literacy specialist to work in small groups, or one-to-one if necessary, with students in year 7 who have reading ages below their chronological age.  Interventions used for groups include Read Write inc., Fresh Start, Literacy Box, Toe by Toe and Inference Training. Reading interventions are monitored and progress carefully tracked using GL Assessment NGRT and the Renaissance STAR reader test.  All students in years 7, 8 and 9 have reading logs, which are monitored, and take part in the Accelerated Reader scheme. Literacy support is provided for students further up the school who still require additional intervention.

Total received for 2017-18

We received £17,500 in catch-up funding to support Year 7 students who join the Academy with numeracy or literacy skills below expected level of progress.

How it is spent

To support students we have invested in the ARK English and maths Mastery Programmes for Year 7.  Year 7 students will follow either a Traditional or a Foundation pathway for the mastery programmes.  This  ensures students are supported to make progress, depending on their starting points.

We have also invested in the Fresh Start Phonics programme that offers 3 x 1hr reading intervention sessions to specific students who are identified has having very low reading ages as tested by NGRT and WRAT. We have arranged for students who have reading ages below their chronological age to work in small groups, or one-to-one if necessary to improve their skills.  Interventions used for groups include, Read Write inc., Fresh Start, Literacy Box, Toe by Toe  and Inference Training, among others.

Literacy support is also provided for students further up the school who still require additional intervention with additional reading intervention planned for Family Time for Years 9 and 10 across Term 5 and 6. Alongside this we have invested in books for Family time sessions so that students are able to share a book together as we believe sharing a love of reading is important.  We invested in a numeracy specialist who continues to work within the Academy focusing on year 7 students who join us with below expected levels of numeracy ability.  All students who benefited from working with this specialist made demonstrable progress.

The impact the literacy and numeracy catch up premium

The majority of students make very good progress in both maths and English.  Relative to their starting points students in Year 7 made better progress than their peers nationally.  An example of the rapid acceleration in reading ages for students in year 7 is shown below.

Fresh Start Phonics Data

We have used a variety of methods to assess the impact of these interventions.  Reading interventions are monitored and progress carefully tracked using GL Assessment, NGRT and the Renaissance STAR reader test. All students in years 7, 8 and 9 have reading logs, which are monitored, and take part in the Accelerated Reader scheme. In addition for both the English and maths Mastery programmes there are termly assessments that are benchmarked against national standards.  Our students in 2017-18 made very good progress in both English and maths.  Students in the English mastery treatment group scored on average, 4.32 percentage points higher than the control group and a similar effect has been reported with maths mastery programmes.
