Vincent and Flavia Assist Enterprise Day

The professional dancers are lined up as part of a programme of guest speakers and events which are designed to give students an insight into different careers, and an understanding about how businesses operate.

Each year group will be taking part in a day of activities which have been set up by different curriculum areas, such as PE, science, English, maths, ICT, technology and drama, to encourage students to think about the kinds of businesses that operate within these disciplines.

Year 7 will be taking part in a dance workshop run by Vincent and Flavia, and also be hearing from a representative from the David Lloyd Leisure company who will be speaking about how the business was founded by the British tennis player in 1980. They will then be brainstorming the key things that customers look for in a leisure centre, to help them understand why David Lloyd is so successful.

Year 8 will be working on a series of ‘Design and Make’ exercises with the technology department, designed to teach them about teamwork and good communication skills. They will be creating balloon powered vehicles inspired by the jet propelled cars that broke the land-speed record and discussing why good design is so important.

The science department will be talking to Year 9 students about the types of jobs and careers that scientists pursue, and helping them get to grips with a series of sound and light experiments, including designing their own musical instruments.

Year 10 will be learning about the media with the help of the English and ICT departments. One group of students will be visiting the Evening Post building to see how the Western Daily Press gets produced, and another group will be writing and recording podcasts using the Academy’s specialist ICT equipment.

The maths department have arranged for the Year 11 students to take part in workshops run by representatives from national insurance company Liverpool Victoria. Some students will be completing a nationally recognised qualification in Leadership and Management, whilst others will be learning about good financial management.

As part of the collapsed curriculum day, the drama department will be leading a group of talented student actors on a trip to the Tobacco Factor. They will receive a ‘behind the scenes’ tour and learn about how ticket sales, promotion, and events management are key components in the success of a theatre.

The day’s events will be recorded by a group of ‘roaming student reporters’, who will also be interviewing Vincent and Flavia about how they set up their professional dance company following their success on Strictly Come Dancing. The students will be putting all their reports together in a ‘Business and Enterprise’ newspaper at the end of the day.

Business Studies teacher Keryn Perkins said: “We’re really looking forward to what promises to be a fun and informative day.

“The event was set up to support the Business and Enterprise part of our Academy specialism, which also focuses on Mathematics and ICT. It is about encouraging students to look outside the Academy environment and engage with different types of business models and companies.

“We hope that the practical activities they will be taking part in will not only be a lot of fun for the students, but will also illustrate how the subjects they study could translate into possible careers.”

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
