Students and staff at Oasis Academy Brightstowe are preparing to take part in a range of sporting challenges this Friday to raise money for Sport Relief.
Sport Relief is a national campaign that was set up in 2002 to support the work that Comic Relief carries out globally. It encourages people to do something active to raise funds for vulnerable people in the UK and in very poor countries around the world.
To kick-start a whole day of sporting activities taking place on the day, Oasis Academy Brightstowe will be holding a hoola-hooping competition in the sports hall at lunchtime.
Inspired by the ’Hula Hoops Hoopathon’ that will take place in Bristol city centre on Sunday, Academy students and staff will be challenged to hoola-hoop for as long as they can without stopping, in an effort to set a collective best time. Practise sessions will be running prior to the contest to give students a chance to perfect their technique.
There will also be a sponsored student football match between a team of Bristol City and Bristol Rovers supporters on the field during lunchtime. The match has been organised by Year 11 students Lewis Hirons and Robert Stott-Ingram who wanted to do something to support the Academy’s fundraising efforts.
Lewis said: “We saw adverts for Sport Relief on TV and knew that the Academy was planning to do some fundraising, so we spoke to the Head of PE about getting involved.
“It was our idea to do a match between City and Rovers fans, because the whole Academy supports either one or the other, and we thought students could sponsor their favourite team to help raise funds.
“It should be a laugh – Mr Robottom is going to be manager of the Rovers fans and Mr Archer is going to be manager of the City fans, and then Mr Williams and Mr Knight are going to be linesmen. Hopefully everyone will come along and donate lots of money.”
At 2.30pm, the whole Academy will be taking part in a sport relief mile round the athletics track. Students and staff can walk or run the 5 laps if they feel able, and once they have completed the distance, they will receive a congratulatory sticker before making their way home.
Head of PE Karl Robottom said: “I am really looking forward to this Friday’s activities and am encouraged by the high levels of enthusiasm and motivation that students and staff have already shown for getting involved.
“Sport Relief is a really good cause and a great incentive to go out and do something active. I think doing the mile altogether as an Academy will be a really positive thing to do as a school community. I hope that those individuals who feel like pushing themselves will try and run some of the distance, and those who would prefer to walk round will receive the encouragement and motivation of being part of a big team. I am definitely looking forward to it.”

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
