Oasis Academy Brightstowe Makes it into Top 50 of Global Maths Challenge

The annual event consists of an online competition to see how many maths questions can be answered correctly during a two day period, and schools and individuals from all over the world can compete with one another for a place in the World Maths Day Top 50 Hall of Fame. Over 2 million students from 37,000 schools in 200 countries were registered and overall maths questions were answered correctly in 48 hours.

Over the two school days, six classes of Brightstowe students from Years 9, 10 and 11 spent one of their maths lessons answering the online questions to earn points for the Academy team, and so kept up a continuous relay. As a result of their joint efforts, they correctly answered 77,071 number of questions in total.

Year 9 student John Thorne personally answered 8,823 questions correctly and was so keen to earn more points for the Academy that he continued to take part during the evening from his computer at home! Other high flyers included Joseph Marshall, Matthew Moseley, Lewis Hepburn, Metin Smith and Jess Griffiths.

Vice Principal Sally Ganner said: “The students did fantastically well and I was overjoyed by their enthusiasm and team spirit, which they kept up the whole way through.

“It is a testament to their hard work and tenacity that they made it into the Top 50 – at one point they were ranked19th out of all the schools from across the world. That’s no small feat when you consider that they competed in the 14-18year olds category against many sixth form colleges with students much older than they are.

“This kind of event is such a good opportunity for students to put the skills that they learn in their lessons into practice, and I hope it will kindle in them a lifelong passion for the subject.”

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
