Bully Counsellors Have New Approach for 2010

The group is supported by Academy Learning Mentors, the Hub team and the Avon & Somerset Police, who give the students training in ‘Restorative Justice' techniques which help them to solve issues and disputes.

For 2010, the group have decided to take a more strategic approach to their work to encourage other students to use their services and access support.

Each individual Bully Counsellor has been attached to a House and will be spending time with a specific tutor group in order to get to know the students better and encourage familiarity.

Year 8 Bully Counsellor Scott Healey said: "I think it's a good idea to get to know tutor groups because then the others know who you are and they're not worried about coming up to you.

"When we run our drop-in sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, sometimes students don't come because they don't want to speak to people they don't know.

"This way, people recognise me in the corridors and stuff, and aren't afraid to ask me questions. Most of the things we deal with aren't students being mean - they're mostly misunderstandings or fall outs that we can make better.

"I really enjoy being a Bully Counsellor and would like to work with people when I leave school and be something like a Community Police Officer."

The Bully Counsellors have also been working with Year 7 students, who may be finding the transition between primary and secondary difficult.

Hub Development Worker Jen Conlan said: "The Bully Counsellors have been speaking in assemblies about the service they provide and making sure the new students know where to come if they have a problem or need some advice.

"I think that for Year 7's to be able to recognise some friendly faces outside of their tutor groups, really helps the transition process, even if it's just a wave or kind word in the corridor.

"We are also hoping to recruit some Year 7's over the summer to become the next generation of Bully Counsellors, so it is important that they are aware of this service."

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
