Brightstowe Celebrates Bright Stars

There was much to celebrate, as in its first year since opening in 2008, Oasis Academy Brightstowe saw 58% of its students passing 5 or more GCSEs with A*-C grades, representing a 66% rate of improvement.

During the event, which was open to family and friends, the Academy presented the graduating class with their examination certificates and handed out individual awards for academic achievement and special commendments.

Luke Saunders of Shirehampton received an award for ‘Outstanding Performance’ in History. The former student, who is currently enrolled in College, said: “I was really pleased to get the award – I really didn’t expect it. I’ve always enjoyed History and my teacher here at Brightstowe made lessons really interesting, which encouraged me to carry it on at college.”

Stephen Rogers received an award for ‘Vocational Achievement’ for his dedication to the programme he was placed on, through which he secured a prestigious Horticultural scholarship. He said: “It’s great to have an evening like this because it makes everyone feel like they did well and their achievements meant something.”

Nine students were also presented with the CMI Certificate in Team Leadership by special guest Julie Holden from insurance company Liverpool Victoria, with whom Oasis Academy Brightstowe has partnered to deliver adult Leadership and Management qualifications that support their Business and Enterprise specialism.

Principal Julie Winterman said: “We are delighted to have been able to hold this celebration evening, which we hope will become an annual event.

“These former students have been a credit to the Academy, and local sixth forms and colleges have already been in touch to say how impressed they are with the students that have come from Brightstowe this year.

“We are keen to recognise their achievements and are proud that each and every one of these students has accomplished something here that they can be proud of.”
