It is hoped that the free sessions, which will run over the summer, will encourage more children to participate in sporting activities and help the local cricket club to recruit new members.
The partnership was set up by Jon Archer, School Sports Co-ordinator at Oasis Academy Brightstowe. As part of his role, he works with local sports clubs to encourage young people to play more sport both inside and outside of school.
Mr Archer said: “I am very pleased to be able to run this scheme in conjunction with Andy Geddes, who is the Youth Coaching Co-ordinator here at Shirehampton Cricket Club.
“The club has some of the best cricket facilities in North West Bristol, and it is great to see these youngsters getting to grips with batting and bowling, and having fun at the same time.
“At the Academy, we are always trying to encourage our students to lead healthy and active lifestyles and take part in more sporting activities.
“This scheme gives youngsters from local primaries the opportunity to take part in a serious sport that they might not usually play until they are in secondary school. Hopefully, they will go on to develop an enthusiasm for cricket and all sports in general.”
The scheme has already proved very popular, with over 30 children attending each week from local primary schools including Stoke Bishop, Weston Park, Avonmouth, Avon, Shirehampton and Sea Mills.
The evening sessions are running every Friday at 4pm until the end of July, at Shirehampton Cricket Club on Penpole Lane.
