Brightstowe Start Bike Maintenance Club

The scheme is being run free of charge by the School Beat Manager, a local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) from the Avon & Somerset Police Force, and a Learning Mentor from the Academy.

Over a six-week period, students will learn the skills needed to repair and maintain their own bikes, and gain enough cycling proficiency knowledge to enable them to ride to school safely.

They are being asked to bring their own bike along to the after-school club, where they will be shown how to check whether or not it is road-worthy. Any cycles found to be lacking, will be repaired by the students under the close supervision of staff, using a range of used and new parts purchased locally with a small funding stream, or from bikes held by the Police that would normally be scrapped.

Once the bikes are ready to hit the road, the students will be taken through a cycling proficiency course by two other PCSOs who work in the local area, designed to give them the skills and confidence to ride safely on the road.

As a reward for completing the course, the students will be taken on a trip to Ashton Court Estate, where they will be taken around a mountain biking course with a qualified instructor.

School Beat Manager PC Savage said: “I am really pleased to be able to offer this scheme to the students at Brightstowe.

“We are keen to encourage more students to cycle to and from school, but we recognise that they need to have the skills to keep them safe on today’s busy roads.

“Many young people have their own bikes, but if these get broken or worn out, they either don’t have the parts or the knowledge they need to repair them, so they end up being left to rust.

“If this course can give the students the skills and enthusiasm to get back into biking, then we will be very happy.”

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
