The five students from Years 10 and 11 ran a Harmony Camp in the summer holidays with the help of people development company HumanUtopia. The camp was aimed at children from local primary schools and saw Academy students running a 3-day programme of activities, including martial arts, dance and cooking workshops. As well as being good fun, the activities also promoted good behaviour and life skills in the younger children, laying strong foundations for the future.
Since last years holiday camp, all the students have taken on extra responsibility within the Academy, with some continuing their work with younger pupils by hosting a Primary Basketball Festival. Together with HumanUtopia, the Academy has also set up a programme through which Academy students become ‘Heroes’ and deliver mentoring sessions for younger students.
Julie Winterman, Principal of Oasis Academy Brightstowe, said, “We are delighted that our students won this prestigious award. Since taking part in this experience, they have all grown in confidence and are now respected leaders within the Academy. In order to pass on these particular skills they have also been open to embracing change in their own lives – a valuable lesson to learn, and one which should hold them in good stead for the future.”
Steve Chalke, Founder and CEO of Oasis Community Learning, said, “I am delighted that this strong team have won the John Williams Award. Like John Williams (after whom the Award was named) they have clearly demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and have incorporated all pupils along the way in an inclusive manner. Like John before them, these students reflect our ethos and our recently launched Charter. Congratulations to them all!”
Spokesperson for the winning students, 15 year old Tomas Kmonicek, said, “It’s an amazing feeling to win this award. We put a lot of hard work in, and it was great fun to deliver. I think the pupils we worked with enjoyed the workshops and they all responded well to them. It’s definitely worth being a part of this project.”
Our Education Charter statements encapsulate the core essence of what Oasis Community Learning is striving to achieve; the values in the statements express what motivates our educational emphasis and focus, while also describing the attitudes and attributes shared across our organisational family. These statements are our identity and DNA – they inform the reader or listener who we are, and what we want to achieve, both in an educational setting, but also in our holistic approach to each and every person we encounter.

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
