Oasis Community Learning is an educational foundation that aims to create and sustain a network of excellent learning communities across the UK. They helped set up Oasis Academy Brightstowe, which opened in September 2008, and currently sponsor 11 other Academies, including Oasis Academy Bristol in Hengrove.
On 11th May, the Brightstowe students will be travelling to the annual awards event which will be held in the International Convention Centre in Birmingham. The students will get to enjoy a sit-down 3 course meal and meet the Rev. Steve Chalke, inspirational speaker, and the founder of Oasis Community Learning.
Each of the 12 Academies were asked to nominate students for awards in the following categories: ‘Greatest Improvement in Learning’, ‘Greatest Team Endeavour’ and ‘Outstanding Sporting or Cultural Achievement’.
The first Brightstowe nominee is Year 11 student John Thorne, who has been nominated for the ‘Greatest Improvement in Learning’ award by his mathematics teacher Sally Ganner.
Ms Ganner said: “John is an exceptional student who has worked really hard to overcome personal barriers in order to achieve his best, especially in mathematics.
“He sat an early entry mathematics GCSE exam last November and achieved an A* grade, which was a fantastic result! His determination and tenacity are also reflected in his work across other curriculum areas and we have high hopes for John’s GCSE results in August.”
The nomination for ‘Greatest Team Endeavour’ goes to Year 11 students Jordan Kenyon, Taylor Cunliffe, Tomas Kmonicek, Jess Griffiths and Ryan Raines. They organised and co-ordinated a ‘Harmony Camp’ with Academy partners humanutopia, where they delivered a range of summer holiday workshops for children from local primary schools.
Academy Principal Julie Winterman said: “I am very proud of these five students for working hard and delivering such a fantastic event. They organised their own resources, wrote their own risk assessments and then worked full time through the first week of the holidays on a voluntary basis to lead the camp itself.
“Since that experience, all the students have grown in confidence and are now respected as leaders within the Academy community. They have taken on extra responsibilities, providing additional support at lunchtimes and even delivering a sports camp for primary aged children earlier this year. They are fantastic role models for the other students.”
Year 11 Lewis Hepburn is the current IBA Judo Champion and is nominated for the ‘Outstanding Sporting or Cultural Achievement’ award.
Head of PE, Karl Robottom said: “Lewis is incredibly enthusiastic about his sport, and believes it is something that everyone should have the chance to enjoy. He has given freely of his own time to introduce Judo to his fellow students at Brightstowe.
“He taught a Beginner’s Judo Skills class at the humanutopia Harmony Camp in the summer holidays and now leads an after school Judo club with his Dad at the Academy.
“He is absolutely dedicated to championing the sport within Brightstowe, yet he has never slipped behind in his school work, or missed deadlines.”
