Year 7 Learn About City of Bristol

In March, Year 7 went on an extensive tour of the sights and landmarks of Bristol to learn more about their home city.

They travelled with the ‘City Sightseeing Bristol’ company who provided an open-top bus and two excellent guides who told students about the historical and cultural development of the city.  The students enjoyed sitting on the top deck and looking out at the landmarks, even if it was a bit chilly!

Year 7 then had a guided tour of the Bristol Central Library and visited the impressive Bristol Cathedral which many students had not seen before. This was followed by a brisk walk along the harbourside, from which point they were able to observe historical replica Tudor ship The Matthew and Brunel’s warship the S.S. Great Britain.

From there, they walked up Brandon Hill to see Cabot Tower where they had a picnic lunch, and then headed up Park Street for a visit to the Bristol Museum. In the latter part of the afternoon, Year 7 went up to walk across the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and learnt about how it was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 19th Century.

Head of Year 7 Adam Knight said: “Year 7 have been completing a series of projects about their city and its history, which this trip was a key part of. The students really enjoyed the day out of the Academy and the opportunity it gave them to see many of the cities landmarks up close.

“Many of the students said that although they had lived in Bristol all their lives, they had never looked into the cities heritage before, so it was a very interesting experience for them.

“The project was part of the Year 7 competency curriculum, which all new Academy students follow in the first year. It is designed to help them develop confidence and key skills, such as problem-solving and good communication. Learning about their city helped them to feel a sense of belonging, as well as giving them an introduction to the local history and geography of the area.”
