Academy Involved in Poetry Slam!

‘Poetry Slamming’ is competitive poetry where the emphasis is on 'good writing', 'good performance' and 'warmth of audience response' and 6 schools took part in the annual event.

To introduce students to the genre, and encourage them to write their own ‘slams’, Poetry Slam ran a workshop at the Academy where students worked in small groups to produce pieces that were performed at the end of the session.

Three of these groups were intended to be chosen for the Inter-School competition, but four entries were so good that the Academy Principal Julie Winterman had to make the final decision!

The theme of the Inter-School competition was ‘Doing The Right Thing’ and the students ‘slams’ dealt with a variety of problems that some young adults face, such drink and drugs, and tried to promote a more positive lifestyle.

Students who took part include:

Megan Murdoch-Henry, Drue Farrell, Taylor Cunliffe

Georgina Reed, Tom Davies, Molly Nelson-Case, Beth Kenyon

Charlotte White, Kasie Huxtable

Head of English, Sian Davies, said: “The students really enjoyed this exercise and learnt a lot. They had to think about rhyme and rhythm and use drama skills for their performance.”

“I am really proud of all our students for taking part and performing in front of everyone. Our school came third altogether and one teacher at the winning school thought that Drue’s beat-boxing impression was the best.”

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
