The group of ten GCSE students were the first in the region to take part in such a course which was held at the Academy last week, following the recent GCSE examinations. Students were required to attend in office dress.
The two-day course was run by StudyFlex, a company who provides management development and leadership training through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and is the first training company of its kind to make adult qualifications available to over 16s in schools and colleges nationwide.
The initiative was sponsored by national insurance company Liverpool Victoria, who have partnered with Oasis Academy Brightstowe to help support their ICT, Mathematics and Business specialism.
Assistant Principal Sally Ganner said: “We are very pleased to partner with Liverpool Victoria and Studyflex to help give our Year 11s a head-start in the world of work. We feel it is our duty to prepare students as much as possible for life outside of the Academy.
“All the students who took part will achieve an ‘Introductory Certificate in Team Leadership’ that will be a prestigious addition to their CVs. Following the success of this pilot, we will be offering more students the chance to take part in this course next year.”
Designed to offer a broad look at the skills needed for management and leadership roles within the workplace, the course introduced students to ways of managing resources, communicating effectively, planning for projects and working with others.
Julie Holden, Learning and Development Partner at Liverpool Victoria, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Oasis Academy Brightstowe and helping StudyFlex to bring this adult qualification into schools across the UK.
“We believe in supporting young people in society and guarantee to offer any student who completes this course an interview with us if they apply for a job at Liverpool Victoria within the next six months.”
Peter Thorp from Studyflex said “The students of Brightstowe were a pleasure to work with. We are now working with more than 60 schools and over 1500 students helping them to develop their personal leadership skills and gain an adult management qualification.”
