Academy set up Ultimate Frisbee Club

Their new-found enthusiasm for the sport comes after a group of Academy students learnt how to play the game during the Bristol Festival of School Sport.

The festival took place in March at the University of Bristol’s Coombe Dingle Sports Complex and aims to encourage students who do not represent their school in traditional sports, to try a range of different sporting activities such as ultimate Frisbee, extreme golf, hip-hop dancing and lacrosse.

Students who tried the sport said: “When we went to the festival, we got to try lots of different sports we never knew existed, like Ultimate Frisbee. It’s a really fun game to play; much more exciting than throwing a Frisbee on the beach and not as intimidating as some other sports.”

The team is being set up by the Academy PE Department and coaching company Catch The Spirit Ltd, who specialise in teaching disc sports such as Ultimate Frisbee.

Following well-received taster sessions at the Bristol Festival of School Sports, Catch The Spirit is setting up two junior teams in Bristol with the help of Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Sports Unlimited, Bristol City Council and the University of Bristol’s RELAYS project.

Coach Matt Cutler said: “It is great to be working in partnership with the Academy to set up a junior Ultimate Frisbee team. Disc sports are really accessible and are a fun way to keep fit and play as part of a team. I would encourage young people locally to come down and try out the sport.”

The training sessions, which are also open to young people from outside of the Academy, will be held at Oasis Academy Brightstowe every Wednesday from 4.00 – 5.30pm. There will be a small charge of 50p to take part.

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
