Academy Goes Banana's for Fairtrade Fortnight

The Academy supported the record effort by encouraging their students to eat over 500 Fairtrade banana’s in total during the afternoon.

'Go Bananas for Fairtrade' is the finale of Fairtrade Fortnight 2009. 200,000 people worldwide took part in the campaign which hopes to see a record amount of people eating as many Fairtrade bananas as possible in a 24hr period. The Fairtrade Foundation will record the tally on their website www.fairtrade.org.uk.

Oasis Academy Brightstowe relied on charitable donations from local shops and church groups to supply enough bananas to go around the students and 626 were given in total. Shirehampton Co-op donated a box of 100 Fairtrade bananas, as did Tesco at Golden Hill, whilst Sainsbury’s at Clifton Down gave 200. Teachers helped out by bringing a bunch to work on Friday morning.

Year 11 Head Boy Luke Saunders said: ‘Here at Oasis Academy Brightstowe we are passionate about supporting the Fairtrade Foundation because they tackle the exploitation of producers in developing countries.’

The event was organised by a small team of local volunteers who wanted to raise awareness of the Fairtrade Foundation. Gap-year volunteer Jonny Swales even wore a banana suit for the occasion!

The Academy is also hoping to produce a ‘Brightstowe Fairtrade Banana and Chocolate Recipe Book’ including Fairtrade recipes designed by students as part of their Food Tech classes.

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
