Making Theatre Child's Play

The workshops were aimed to help pupils understand dramatic techniques being used in a production of ‘Hood in the Wood’ being held at Bath’s the egg theatre between 5th and 7th February.

‘Hood in the Wood’ is a modern day adaptation of the much-loved fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, featuring minimal props, one musician and just one actor. It relies mainly on the use of physical theatre, live sound effects and performance poetry to communicate the tale.

The series of workshops based around ‘Hood in the Wood’ were led by Schools and Community Project Supporter Lucy Girvan, who works with the egg to assist local schools in their drama provisions. Miss Girvan introduced Year 7 classes to the art of physical theatre, which involves story-telling through physical means.

In the lively workshops, Oasis Academy Brightstowe students were encouraged to represent objects that would normally have been supplied by the props department, using just their bodies and voices. Some students grouped together to create bits scenery or a tableaux that told the story.

One student remarked: “Before today I would have never imagined that you could put on a play without scenery or props! But the workshop showed us that in some drama this isn’t a problem.”

Drama teacher at Oasis Academy Brightstowe Helen Ashcroft said: “‘It was fantastic to have someone from the theatre come and explain the dramatic techniques being used in the performance. I’m sure it will help pupils to identify with the actors and appreciate the performance.”
